UBSC experiences
My name is Peter Liang, a senior in MKHS. I was a former student of UBSC and now I am a TA there. I only knew the most basic English words and some of the most commonly used sentences when I first came to the US. The things that I knew were basically the tip of the iceberg, my level of English is far not enough to support me to communicate and catch up in class. Lucky I found UBSC, a place where immigrants can improve their English level and help them adapt to the community. UBSC is a professional after school program where students are separated into different groups based on their English level so that they can all learn the stuff that they need to know instead of learning the same material that they knew already. Of course learning might be boring and dry. With that in mind UBSC provides a ticket system where students can exchange snacks and other supplies with the ticket that they earned in class via their extraordinary/active performance. Not only providing a good environment, UBSC also provides students extracurricular activities like summer camp, tour to colleges, field trips etc…. It was in my junior year that I went back to UBSC and started as a TA. I feel happy helping others, especially people who are experiencing the similar things I went through. Same as the schools, UBSC was closed when the pandemic came around. Let’s hope we can get through the pandemic safely and can’t wait to see everyone again!

My name is Calista Kwong. I started serving in UBSC around 15 years ago. I have taught mainly in the high school and elementary school programs and occasionally substituted in the adult English class. I have seen how the program has grown throughout the years and is now being recognized by the community. From my experience working with new immigrants at the English Language Development Office in Alhambra Unified School District, I understand the hardship of facing a new culture and new language. Therefore, I appreciate the services UBSC provides for these families. All the teachers and volunteers have a genuine heart to serve this population. They walk alongside with these young immigrants during this stage of growth and provide them with helpful guidance. It has been my privilege to be part of this community and to be able to make an impact on the life of them.
